Investigating Where We Live

Investigating Where We Live (IWWL) is a summer outreach program at the National Building Museum, designed for students aged 12-16 from the D.C. metropolitan area. Participants learn to use creative writing and photography as a means of understanding and describing D.C. neighborhoods. At the end of the program, participants will share what they have learned by creating a public exhibition. In 2010, students will focus on the neighborhoods of Petworth, Southwest Waterfront, and Trinidad.

Gianni: Interview Day

From the interviews I learned that the neighborhood of Petworth wasn't what I thought it was. I thought it would be a quiet suburb but now that I see and hear what it's like my view has changed. I also learned that there are 3-4 schools and lots of construction so they can improve the neighborhood of Petworth.

I was suprised by all that I learned on the interviews too: hearing first-hand about some of the history, getting the perspective of those that work but don't live there, what people think about all the change and construction going on around the metro and on Georgia Ave, etc. It's cool that your perceptions have shifted and grown fuller.
