Investigating Where We Live (IWWL) is a summer outreach program at the National Building Museum, designed for students aged 12-16 from the D.C. metropolitan area. Participants learn to use creative writing and photography as a means of understanding and describing D.C. neighborhoods. At the end of the program, participants will share what they have learned by creating a public exhibition. In 2010, students will focus on the neighborhoods of Petworth, Southwest Waterfront, and Trinidad.

Max: What Community Means to Me
Community is all about the people in a neighborhood interacting and working together. Many things make up communities. People, houses, schools, and recreation centers are all important parts of a community. I have observed that communities can be very diverse. In Petworth, there are a lot of historical sites and green areas, but there is also a lot of new development. Instead of clashing, these two themes work well together in making the community very interesting and different. There are large old churches preserved in the area, and also new shops opening up. This diversity is part of Petworth's community identity.

"Community identity"- I like that term. You have observed that communities can be very diverse- but you've also had a very diverse experience of many communities, even at your youthful age of 15 going on 16...so Max, tell me: how does Petworth compare and contrast to Littleton, Massachusetts? :) Miss you! - Megan
ReplyDeleteGreat observations Max. There are various elements that compose a community, and the formation of its identity can be very complex. I'm glad that you are not only picking up on various themes on the neighborhood, but are presenting us with how they are working together.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to hear some similar themes connecting each neighborhood, like the idea of new construction and change. They are all manifested in completely different ways in the three places, though.
ReplyDeleteHaving lived and travelled so much in the past 16 years, I believe you are a 'Community Expert'. You have lived and travelled to so many "diverse" habitats and can contribute greatly. I enjoy your views on life and living. You have the same gift of writing as your Dad.
ReplyDeleteMiss you soooo much! G. Linda
